I’m not a NaNoWriMo Winner…But I’m No Loser

As you probably already guessed from the title of this blog post, I didn’t complete a 50k word novel in the month of November. It wasn’t for lack of trying, and no I am not making excuses by saying this, but I ended up getting a new freelance gig, a new part-time job and a couple of personal things came up throughout the month of November.

I finished out the month-long writing challenge at just over 34,000 words.

I know, so close. Maybe I could have just pushed through and made myself finish on time, but I don’t feel bad about not completing my manuscript in time. I’m still working on it, I think I’ll have the first draft completed by the end of 2012….gosh that feels weird to say type ;). Where did November go? Oh, yeah, now I remember last month, I spent a good portion of it hunched over my laptop!

Ah, NaNoWriMo, you’ve bested me again this year….maybe next year I’ll finally complete a 50k word novel in 30 days. After all, third time’s the charm, right? 🙂

  1. I wasn’t able to officially finish either. I’m one of those weird writing freaks who loves to write my first draft by hand. I’ve been typing it up, and I wrote in the area of 30,000 for the month. One year I wrote 62,000, but didn’t find that out until after the fact. Anyway, you’re still writing and so am I! (What genre, btw? I write YA.)

    1. I write contemporary romance, but this book is more of a historical romance (set in the 20s). It’s something I’ve never attempted before…which could be part of the problem. In hindsight, attempting something new like this probably wasn’t a smart choice as far as NaNo manuscripts go. It’s been a much different process writing this book, simply because of the research I’ve been doing and I’m a little tentative in my writing because I want to get so much of the era right.
Good luck to you in your writing!
P.S. It’s good to know I am not the only one still working on the first draft of a NaNo MS in Dec. We’ll get these novels completed. I know we can do it :).
P.P.S. I love YA fiction, btw!

  2. 34K is still awesome! That’s a really solid writing month. Congratulations. 🙂

I’m of the belief that anyone who even attempts NaNo is a brave soul. It’s a huge undertaking and 34,000 words is an impressive showing.

    1. Thanks, and you’re right! I shouldn’t be too hard on myself, I should be happy, because if I wrote 34k in any of the other 11 months out of the year I’d be ecstatic.
