Valentine’s Day this year is going to be way different than in years past. Even though Coronavirus restrictions in Tacoma are on track to loosen a bit by the time the calendar rolls around to February 14, it might be tough to get reservations at your favorite restaurant with indoor dining capped at 25% capacity.

Since dinner and drinks are a classic way to celebrate with your sweetie, I suggest making reservations as early as possible, because something tells me they’ll fill up fast. Few things are more romantic than dining with a view of the water and Duke’s Chowder House on Ruston Way provides a perfect place to do just that. There’s also a covered, heated outdoor patio, so you have the option to dine indoors or outdoors.

If you don’t want to go out to dinner, don’t know what to do this Valentine’s Day, or are just looking for something a little different to do this year, I have a few suggestions.

En Rama has options for take home nibbles and spirits, like a take home brunch, take home happy hour, and take home pasta and cocktail kits. 

Pack a picnic, weather permitting! Grab a blanket or two, get a thermos full of coffee or hot cider, and another with some soup (homemade or from Infinite Soups) and head to Owen Beach. 

Have low-key date and hit up a brewery or pub. If you’re looking for pub fare like pizza or burgers, and a pint, Odin Brewing is a must visit. Doyle’s Public House offers comfort food like meatloaf and grilled cheese, plus a selection of domestic and imported beers, and a wide variety of house made cocktails.

Treat your honey to something sweet! If you’re like me and believe it’s never too cold for ice cream, take home a pint of Bliss Creamery, a box of Tease Chocolates, or snag a baked goodie from Corina Bakery.

If you’re single, don’t let the day of love pass without letting your friends and family know they’re loved and appreciated. Meet up with a girlfriend and have a galentine’s outing supporting local businesses. You could adopt a new plant baby or two at Jade & Co. Plant Boutique,  or hit up the Ruston Public Market for food, fresh produce, and handmade items.
