There’s just something about summer time that feels equal parts magic and nostalgic. For me, there’s nothing more nostalgic than grabbing a road atlas and planning a summer road trip. And, you can’t take a road trip without the essentials, like fuel, a great playlist, and snacks. 

Since I live in a part of Missouri where almost all of the best summer activities are accessed via I-44, such as Meramec Caverns, Six Flags, and countless state parks, the Meramec River, and other outdoor recreational spots, I thought it might be helpful to put together a handy guide on where to stop along the interstate for road trip goodies. 

Wally’s in Fenton is so many experiences wrapped into one pit stop: you can refill your gas tank, grab snacks for the road like candy, jerky, and popcorn, as well as get a decent bite such as pizza by the slice, barbecue sandwiches, and grab and go salads, fruit cups, and high protein snack packs. Plus, there’s ice cream, coffee, and a large retail space where you can find Wally’s gear and any items you might’ve left behind at home, like maps, coolers, and outdoor gear.

Ozarkland has two locations accessible via I-44: Villa Ridge (closer to St. Louis) and Sarcoxie (closer to Joplin and the Oklahoma State Line). Here you’ll find fudge in a variety of flavors, as well as Missouri souvenirs and trinkets. 

The Whistle Stop is just off I-44, located on Main Street in St. Clair, but this is a great option if you’re looking to grab candy, other sweets, or vintage glass bottled sodas for the road trip as well as stretch your legs, since Main Street offers a number of restaurants and shops. 

Despite its silly name, Uranus Fudge Factory (near Fort Leonard Wood) offers fudge, jams, jellies, nuts and honey, as well as Route 66 souvenirs. 

Stuckey’s (just west of Rolla) has sweets like chocolates, candy, and pecan logs, as well as nuts and souvenirs.

Redmon’s Candy Factory near Springfield offers saltwater taffy, chocolates, and fudge along with snacks and gift items.
